How to Throw a Safe Holiday Party

The holidays are here! There are parties to attend and parties to throw. If you’re hosting a party this year, you’re not just responsible for holiday cheer. You’re also in charge of the safety of your guests.

Here are Kuna’s tips to make your next holiday party safe and successful:

Pre-Party Preparation

• Check the weather. Advise your guests or postpone the party if there will be heavy rain, wind or snow on the day of your event.

• Keep food refrigerated before it is served. Don’t forget to prepare options for your guests that have special dietary needs: vegetarians, vegans, or those with allergies.
• Be aware of the local laws, especially if you’re throwing a large or loud party. You may need to advise your local police or homeowners association of your upcoming party, especially if you are expecting many guests.
• Make sure your holiday decorations adhere to government standards and regulations. The Consumer Product Safety Commission regularly posts updates on product recalls and safety tips.
• Have necessary emergency phone numbers handy.
• Keep your guest list manageable. Keep in mind your venue’s capacity, and do not exceed it.
• Set up and check your venue’s security systems. Make sure your locks and smoke detectors are working.
• Put away all valuables and breakables. You want one less thing to worry about!

Preparation is key to having a great party

During the Party

• Keep pets in a quiet part of the house. If they will be left alone, give them their toys for distraction. Make sure they have food and water.
• Be aware of what’s going on during the party. It is your responsibility to ensure that everyone is safe.
• Manage the consumption of alcohol. A good practice is to assign a “bartender”. This way, instead of helping themselves, guests go to an individual who can keep track of how much alcohol each guest has had. Watch out for inappropriate behavior.

After the Party

• Begin cleaning up before the party is over by stowing away excess food and drinks. Encourage your guests to dispose of their trash and dishes properly.
• Make sure each guest is in the proper condition to drive, or that there are designated drivers.
